City of Lansing Public Service Department
AboutFrom the frenetic world of journalism to the slow steady pace of city of government, running the social media of the Lansing city departments proved to be an intersection of the two. Not so much in the sense of how fast you were working on projects, but battling with the element of transparency.
A lot of my internship at the City of Lansing revolved around working as the digital face of the departments. Whether that was building press releases with compatible graphics for social media or filming and editing tutorials on how to use the report pot holes on the city's app, the work presented challenges I seldom face in the reporting field. While reporters interact with individuals and use what they have to say to help compose a narrative, employees with the government work with residents to assist them with personal complaints and help the city maintenance requests moving. As an intern, I was also blessed with the opportunity of working as the Public Service mascot, Swish the Fish. Nothing speaks "intern" quite like working as a giant fish on the weekends. |

Some of the videos are meant to educate individuals about some of the services residents may not know their city provides. Others are posted to the website intended to be tutorials for taking advantage of the city's amenities.
There's no better place to look for amateur videography than a city's public service website, but I think that's part of the charm. |
