It's not easy shooting photos of dogs. Especially one that loves to run, enjoys licking the lens and doesn't reflect light because of his black fur. The solution? Take hundreds until you get the right one! And rather than getting every detail of the animal's physique in the viewfinder, the silhouette element matches nicely. There's something about prairie dogs on acres of empty snow-laden farmland that just photograph so well.

Some might say this image is staged, and to those naysayers I announce: Nuts! I have little control over what direction my dog's head turns in the viewfinder, against a backdrop that emits a feeling doom as brooding dark sky pillows emerge from the horizon. And the leash, well that was just luck :).
